3 Dermatologist-Approved Tips for spot and blemish-prone skin you need to know now!

If re-evaluating your skincare goals to help stay in control of spots and blemishes is on the to-do list, then these simple yet effective tips and hacks are for you!

Purifide has partnered with consultant dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto to give her expert insight for achieving your new clearer skin goals

So here are 3 top skincare tips for that’ll help leave you feeling your best, with confidence to achieve all your other goals for the year!

1. SPF – all year ‘round

One of the biggest acne myths is that sunscreen will block your pores and cause spots, so should be avoided. Dr Anjali agrees that this is indeed a myth, saying “Acne-prone skin can be more in need of sun protection as UV exposure can increase pigmentation’.  She adds that ‘sunlight can also drive comedones or blackheads, so it can actually make your acne worse.

Oof. That’ll keep us using our SPF every day, thank you very much. Daily sunscreen is also important due to the increased sensitivity to light that can happen if you’re using some blemish-fighting ingredients like retinol, benzoyl peroxide, some exfoliating acids or vitamin C.

Try a lightweight moisturiser like the Purifide Daily Moisturiser with SPF 30, which is non-greasy and specifically formulated to be hydrating, soothing and to protect sensitive, spot-prone skin.

2. Set a good routine and stick to it

For general skincare, Dr Anjali suggests ‘A morning routine of cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen, with an evening routine of makeup remover, cleanser and then use a gentle light non-comedogenic moisturiser without SPF’.

Figure out your skin type and find the ingredients that work for you. You may find that high-end and high-street cleansers and moisturisers have the same ingredients, so no need to break the bank. Find what works for you and stick to it! Remember that skin’s natural renewal and repair cycle is around 4 weeks, so stick with new routines for at least this long to really see how its working for you before moving on to try the next thing

3. Face and body all in one

If hitting the gym is part of your new year’s plans, you don’t need to splurge on a whole new cleanser, or body mist, or other gym clothes... use your face wash Dr Anjali says:

People who go to the gym or wear tight gym gear for an extended period of time can get more spots on their chest, back and bottom because of the heat and sweat generated and compressed in those areas.

If you are prone to chest and back acne, there's absolutely no reason why you can't use your face washes and moisturisers, containing active ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide or zinc, to wash your chest and back as well.’

The Purifide Blackhead Control Deep Exfoliating Cleanser with 2% Salicylic Acid (which handily states on the pack that it is for the face, chest and back) is ideal for cleansing problem areas on both face and body and saves buying separate ones for face and body – for the money-saving resolution!
